Woman considers divorce after finding out husband won a bet to take her virginity

When couples say ‘I do’ at the altar, it isn’t just a declaration of love but symbolises a life-long commitment to a partner. Marriages work when a husband and wife are honest with their spouse even if they believe the truth will hurt them. While some secrets can be forgiven, others can result in explosive fallouts in a relationship, and in some instances, divorce.

This has been the case for one woman, who says she was left ‘disturbed’ after learning the real reason her husband wanted to tie the knot with her. The couple met while working together at a call centre in their early 20s, and it wasn’t long until they fell madly in love.

Due to her religious upbringing, she explained how she wanted to marry before having sex. Somehow, it ‘became public knowledge’ among employees that she was the daughter of a preacher and was a virgin. “I expected that information to cause me to be ostracised, but it actually had the opposite effect,” she wrote in the Atlanta Black Star.

Despite being weary of most of the men in her workplace, she explained one of her male colleagues stood out from the rest. The unnamed woman explained: “The guys on the floor started showing me a great deal of attention, and I became a very hot commodity. I remember being weary of all of them except for one guy in particular, who just seemed a little different from the rest. I actually gave him my number, and we would spend endless hours on the phone talking about everything and nothing.”

Opening up about their love story, she explained they went on to get married and have kids together. It was only far later on in their marriage that she shockingly found out her husband won a bet to take her virginity. The woman received the shock news at a party with their mutual friends, where one of their former work pals let slip that there had been a bet when they all worked there.

Completely devastated, the woman is now considering divorcing him, admitting she was “crushed” and “really disturbed” by the confession. When she got home, she confronted her husband and he confirmed it – but called the bet ‘childish’.

“He said that even though he was motivated by the bet when he got to know me, he fell in love with me and doesn’t regret tying the knot,” she explained. “I made it clear how I felt about him for going as far as to marry me just to win a bet and take my virginity. I found it to be crude and downright disgusting and told him so. He became defensive and accused me of overreacting and decided to turn his back on me and go back to sleep. I have spoken to my parents about the matter and am considering divorce.”
