Women should ensure they visit appropriate health facilities for proper pregnancy management and childbirth Senior Registrar Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University College Hospital ,Ibadan Dr Opeyemi Adedeji gave the advice while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Ibadan on the occasion to mark this year’s International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.
Dr Adedeji explained that obstetric fistula occurs when there is an abnormal connection between the female private part and bladder which usually occurs from prolonged labour of childbirth complications.
He noted that this occurs mostly among teenagers with early pregnancy who visits traditional birth attendants for child birth resulting in their labour not being properly managed.
Dr Adedeji described obstetric Ffistula as one of the common cause of maternal morality death in the country arising from unskilled birth attendants who are not conversant with the signs of danger during labour.
He affirmed that obstetric fistula can be treated by specialised health facilities, noting that some women who have the disease without proper treatment get stigmatisatized.
Speaking on the theme ’20 Years in Progress But not Enough, Act Now to End Fistula by 2030′, Dr Adedeji called on governments to recruit more specialised health personnel and to create more public awareness to end Obstetric Fistula in the country.
