Even if you’ve been blessed with great genetics, it’s important to take great care of your skin – as well as diet and lifestyle – if you want to keep the signs of ageing at bay.
According to the whizz, it’s essential to take great care of your skin – here’s how
The beauty pro, Faye Purcell, chatted to Fabulous to reveal how to keep wrinkles at bay

Here to help and offer a helping hand is beauty pro Faye Purcell, Head of Research and Development at Q+A, a natural, clean and ingredient focused skincare brand.

Chatting exclusively to Fabulous, the whizz explained: ”Once we reach our mid-twenties, collagen production decreases by around ~1% per year.

”Whilst this is a slow decline, over time a lack of collagen can cause the skin to appear thin and begin to sag, leading to fine lines and wrinkles.”

Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to tackle this – and none of them involve resorting to Botox or pricey filler injections.
Skincare musts

Peptides

The beauty industry is full of what feels like a million different products – but whilst it may be tempting to snap up every single one of them, it’s best to stick to basics.

Faye said: ”Incorporating products focused on plumping the skin whilst deeply hydrating your complexion is key. Look for anti-ageing products that are formulated with peptides.”

One firm favourite, for instance, is even loved by A-listers, including Jennifer Aniston – Q+A Peptide Facial Serum, £9, which is gentle yet effective alternative to retinol.

Retinol

Those who live and breathe all things beauty will be familiar with retinol, an anti-ageing powerhouse that encourages cell turnover.

Also highly effective when it comes to combating hyperpigmentation and uneven skin texture, retinol should, however, be introduced to your skincare routine slowly.

The beauty pro warned: ”Tell-tale signs that you are using too much include irritated, flaky skin and redness or tenderness.

” I recommend building up a tolerance, starting with once or twice a week and building up to more frequent use.

”In the evening, apply 1-2 pumps of product evenly on to dry skin – applying retinol to wet skin can make irritation more likely.”

Hyaluronic acid

Another great ingredient for all ages, hyaluronic acid is especially great for supporting more mature skin, said Faye.

”Hyaluronic acid not only increases hydration levels but can improve skin firmness and smooth out wrinkles thanks to its plumping effect.”

However, here it’s also essential to know the correct way of applying the serum, warned the pro.

”If there’s no moisture on the surface of your skin to bring in, hyaluronic acid can draw that moisture up from the lower layers of your dermis, which in turn can make your skin feel drier.

”Apply your serum to a damp face to leave your skin feeling hydrated and glowing.”

The Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum, £6.50, is their bestselling product – so popular that the brand sells one every three minutes.

Vitamin E

One of the most powerful antioxidants out there, vitamin E is fantastic for achieving more youthful looking skin.

Not only does it support cell renewal, the powerful formula also helps to repair UV-related skin damage and can even reduce the appearance of scars and blemish-related hyperpigmentation.

”Additionally, vitamin E has moisturising and healing benefits and helps to strengthen the skin barrier function – it’s an all-rounder!”

You’ll find vitamin E (listed as tocopherol on the ingredients list) in every Q+A moisturiser, as well as our Super Food Facial Oil, £8, and Grapefruit Cleansing Balm, £9.
Diet Dos and Don’ts

Water

What matters is not just what you put on your face but also how you look after it from within – and here, a healthy, balanced and nourished diet is a must.

Faye said: ”Aim to consume at least 2 litres of water or other sugar- and caffeine-free beverages every day to keep your skin happy.

”And don’t wait until you feel thirsty – it means you are probably already dehydrated.”

Sugar & booze

The foods you consume also play a key role in the appearance of your skin, with a diet high in sugar accelerating ageing process.

”Bare this in mind when it comes to alcohol too – cocktails and sweet wines like Moscato’s can be extremely high in sugar, so a clear spirit, like gin, with a light tonic, is a much better choice.”

DIY massage

Sharing her tips and tricks, the whizz also advised to give yourself a little SPA treatment at home – and this doesn’t necessarily have to be fancy.

Faye said: ”Cleansing with a nourishing cleanser twice a day and giving yourself a mini massage can really help the face look more youthful.

”It promotes blood flow and relieves tension, helping rid the face of puffiness and improves overall radiance.”

She went on: ”Use wide circles, sweeping from under your ears, down toward your throat, and up along your jawline and concentrate on the cheek muscles which can help lift the jawline.”
Night, night… zzzz

Our skin loves napping and getting a good night’s rest as much as we do, reminded Faye.

Whilst it may be difficult for some, you should aim to sleep for at least seven hours every night – this gives your skin the perfect chance to repair itself and helps new cells to replace the older ones.
Switch up your make-up routine

Fine lines are inevitable, but their appearance can be made worse by the incorrect make-up products, Faye insisted,

”As your skin matures, switch a heavier foundation for a lighter and more hydrating skin tint to avoid creasing.

”A ‘gripping’ primer will help the lightweight formula stay in place all day. Look for products that say ‘dewy or ‘light-reflecting’ on the label and add a pop of liquid blush on cheeks for a rosy and radiant finish as its more flattering than powder formula….CONTINUE READING
