One pest in particular that makes its way into our homes during hot weather is fly species.

From houseflies to blue bottles, drain flies and fruit flies, Britons may be inundated with the bugs over the next few days.

Flies seek out warm, moist environments to lay their eggs and the hot weather means they will stay active for longer and reproduce more often.

Having windows and doors open will inevitably attract flies and other insects to our properties.

With this in mind, James Taylor, product director at Make My Blinds has shared several hacks to keep flies out of homes during this week’s heatwave:

This may be difficult in the hot weather but keeping windows and doors open is the most effective way to keep flies at bay.

If homeowners do need to open them, consider investing in fly screens to keep them out.

Insects are attracted to light, so if the windows are open, make sure the lights are switched off while it’s dark outside.

If this isn’t possible, make sure all blinds and curtains are closed to prevent moths and other flies from entering and causing trouble.

Clean up spills and crumbs immediately as these will attract flies. The pests are attracted to moisture so it’s also important to wipe up any spillages, even if it’s just water.

Even your dirty dishes could be attracting flies indoors. Mr Taylor explained: “Flies are attracted to the smell of food, so make sure to wash your dishes right after you use them or pop them straight into the dishwasher.”

Flies can easily get into open packets and containers, even if it’s at the back of the cupboard.

Make sure all containers are sealed and packets have been sealed with a clip, tape or an elastic band.

Flies hate certain strong smells as they overwhelm their sensory perception which makes it uncomfortable for them.

Mr Taylor explained: “Some essential oils, such as peppermint oil and lemongrass oil, have a strong scent that can repel flies.

“You can diffuse these oils in your home or apply them directly to surfaces.”

The blind expert said blinds and curtains can be used to help keep flies out during hot weather.

He added: “On hotter days when we need inside air flow, blinds and curtains can help to keep flies out of your home by blocking their access to windows and doors.

“They can also help to trap flies that are already inside your home. When choosing blinds or curtains, look for ones that are tightly woven and have a small mesh size.

“You can also add a fly screen to your blinds or curtains for added protection….CONTINUE READING
